I attended the first part of HS’ teaching forum, which was a two-hour block that focused on HS colleagues remote learning (RL) design & delivery experiences. The second part, a further two-hour block after the tea break, saw HS’ colleagues share about their experiences innovating on teaching & learning.

A HS colleague is sharing about the innovative teaching

I was impressed by the rich sharing. The HS colleagues were upfront about the following:

  • What they had learnt from their experiences designing and delivering remote learning in their respective modules

  • Their different attempts to understand the students’ experiences in order to make adaptations and improve

  • What they had considered when deciding on the platform (e.g. REAL) and tools to use

  • Possible success factors e.g. introducing RL to first year students in the first semester and how these students are more confident when they encounter remote learning again (or the use of digital tools for learning)

The experience for me reflected on the importance of the culture of reflective practice in schools. The lecturers shared their thoughtful and purposeful teaching practices freely as a community. For instance, Chong Ching Liang, an early proponent of RL in NP, shared how the 100% RL module was developed, how staff were inducted to facilitate the learning, and how the RL experience could be further fine-tuned to enrich the teaching and learning experience for students and staff.

Sharing sessions for the wider NP community helps everyone grow. As more schools open up their sharing sessions to all, there would be deeper levels of conversation about teaching and learning, healthy exchanges of ideas and more importantly, improvement in our teaching practices. I enjoy being part of this professional community that shares, reflects, supports and learns with and from one another. This also reflects the kind of passionate, lifelong learning characteristics we want our students to develop.

Information on upcoming school-based sharing sessions, that are open to the NP Community, can be found in the monthly PDE@NP mailers. So look out for them!
